Lawrenceburg Community TheatER

Performing locally for over 30 years, the Lawrenceburg Community Theater brings the magic of storytelling to life throughout the year. Highlights include an annual Christmas show and diverse productions that showcase the incredible talent of the region’s performers. The community theatre celebrates local creativity and provides engaging entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

Crockett TheatER Performance Series

Experience the magic of live entertainment through our curated Performance Series! Each season features three incredible shows at the historic Crockett Theater, plus two exclusive events for season ticket holders. From country music legends to tribute bands, our lineup offers something for every taste. Season tickets are just $150, providing an unforgettable journey through music and performance.

James D. Vaughan Quartet Festival

An annual celebration of southern gospel music held in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. In 2025, the festival will take place from July 23-26 at the historic Crockett Theater. This four-day event showcases some of the best-known southern gospel quartets in America, honoring the legacy of James D. Vaughan and his profound influence on gospel music.

HISTORY OF THE THEATER

The Crockett Theater, a cherished Art Moderne landmark in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, opened its doors on September 13, 1950, with a screening of "And Baby Makes Three". Named after Lawrence County's most famous resident, David Crockett, the theater was built during a period of significant urban growth in Lawrenceburg.

HISTORY OF THE THEATER

  • Designed by architectural firm Speight and Hibbs in 1948

  • Originally planned as the "Ritz Theater"

  • Construction delayed due to financial considerations

  • Originally constructed as a cinema and later converted to a multi-use entertainment venue

  • Completed in 1950 with a striking Art Moderne facade

Cultural Significance

  • First theater in Lawrence County to show movies seven days a week

  • Hosted various events including concerts, beauty pageants, and theater productions

  • Featured performances by notable acts such as The Carter Family and Little Jimmy Dickens

  • Initial seating capacity of approximately 1,265 (today’s seating capacity is 1,049)

  • Wider "love seats" at the ends of some rows

  • Terrazzo tiles adorning the lobby floors

  • Dazzling marquee lights

Preservation and Current Use

  • Ceased operation as a movie theater in 1985

  • Purchased by the City of Lawrenceburg in 1986

  • Saved from demolition by "The Friends of Crockett Theater"

  • Stewarded by many supporters of the theater including the former Theater Board, leaders of the Lawrenceburg Community Theatre, Downtown Lawrenceburg (main street program), and others.

  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 29, 1997

  • Following enlarging the stage, today’s seating capacity is 1,049, still making it one of the largest venues in the region.

  • Today, the Crockett Theater stands as one of the few operating Art Moderne theaters in the United States, preserving both its architectural heritage and its role as a center for arts and entertainment in Lawrenceburg.
